Our planet might be under pressure, however there is hope. A novel accolade from the science, music and arts festival the Starmus festival aims to inspire people to act.

This new Earth medal bearing Jane Goodall's name will be given to pay tribute to the celebrated scientist and conservationist who died this year. It seeks to acknowledge individuals and groups that advocate for life on Earth.

The Medal's Framework

Initial honorees are expected to be announced at the Starmus VIII festival in the Canary Islands, scheduled from 17–22 October next year.

Reports indicate that Jane Goodall, a former member of the festival's board, had backed the award’s creation. “The idea behind this award, and the festival being tasked with organising it, originated with Jane,” a statement said. “She said she would like for this to occur. And I think due to the unique relationship she shared with us.”

“The Starmus Jane Goodall Earth medal will acknowledge enduring projects undertaken to build an environment a better place for people, animals and the environment and foster motivation to continue such efforts,” said a family member.

Structure and Vision

A co-founder of Starmus stated that the medal – unveiled at a prestigious venue – will likely include several divisions.

“The intent is for it to be inspired by the Stephen Hawking medal for science communication that we created exactly 10 years ago,” he explained. Jane Goodall was a recipient of that very medal.

Expressing concern on the outlook of the planet, a prominent voice said, “To be truthful, it’s very hard to be optimistic. Certain policies in one major nation is conducting a dismissal of evidence. This situation really cripples global initiatives.”

“Realistically, the prospects aren't particularly bright which means we need to commence reflecting, much more seriously about the consequences of human activity. And that’s not only global warming, that’s the entire manner in which we interact with our environment.”

A Call to Action

Therefore, it was noted this is a good time to honor her guiding principles. “It is believed that in bestowing this medal, the focus will be on this core philosophy that Jane embodied – which made her priority, to transform the way we treat fellow creatures with which we share the planet.”

Another key issue at present is the proliferation of misinformation. The theme of the upcoming Starmus festival is set as “the search for truth”.

“It has become apparent that truth has become contested where political interests are involved. This is a perilous development,” he commented. “The science of climate remains a scientific discipline; you cannot allow interference by political agendas in climate science.”

Hope and Determination

The hope remains that the medal can motivate positive change. “The purpose is motivating others to get involved and to show concern and to strive in that direction, truly. Whether or not we feel hopeful, we have to focus on doing the best we can,” it was added. “Accept the possibility of failure, but you still have to work towards succeeding.”

A family member involved in environmental protection expressed hope that “given direction and when empowered, people are capable of being conscientious guardians of our planet”, highlighting the work of a foundation that, in addition to its projects, empowers the next generation get involved with their community, animals, and environment.

“As Jane Goodall repeatedly reminded us, our daily actions make a difference and it is up to us the kind of difference we make,” it was stated. “There is still time and the Starmus Jane Goodall Earth medal will offer support and increase understanding regarding beneficial initiatives currently in progress.”
