The US central bank lowered interest rates on Wednesday, marking the second rate cut in the current year amid financial volatility stemming from the federal government shutdown and trade duties.
Decision Arrives at Extraordinary Time for Central Bank
The move to reduce the key rate by a 0.25% to a range of 3.75% to 4% arrives at an extraordinary juncture for the Fed. The institution has been under immense pressure to cut rates even with persistent inflation.
Central Bank Announcement Highlights Labor Market Shifts
In a statement, the Federal Reserve said that the jobless rate had increased but remains low. “Job gains have decelerated,” the statement notes. “Inflation has moved up and remains somewhat elevated.”
Federal Closure Complicates Fed’s Job
The ongoing federal government shutdown, now among the lengthiest in American history, has also complicated the central bank’s task. Collection of key financial statistics has been suspended without a timeline as staff at the BLS are on leave during the shutdown.
Information Shortage Impacts Policy Decisions
The Federal Reserve usually studies labor statistics to assess employment trends, such as the count of employment gains created to the market and the present unemployment rate. The last jobs report was published in the beginning of last month, before the shutdown, and gave a somewhat gloomy overview of the employment scene in the previous month.
The number of positions added to the market in August was lower by over 100k since the spring, and joblessness rose to 4.3% – the highest since 2021.
Private Data Indicate Continued Decline
Though BLS was scheduled to publish last month’s job market report in the start of last month, it suspended its release when the closure began. Employment data company ADP reported recently that the business segment cut thirty-two thousand positions in September, a indication that the employment landscape is still decelerating.
“Supply as well as demand for workers has declined significantly,” Fed chair the Fed chairman said recently, which he had earlier said comes from trade and immigration measures.
Inflation Report Reveals Gradual Rise
Though BLS’s jobs report has been paused, the agency still issued its inflation report for last month that indicated that prices are rising, albeit slowly. Costs rose three percent over the last year, the peak since January. In April, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the minimum it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is two percent.
