Space Traveler Shares Depression In the Wake of ‘Tsunami of Backlash Following Journey

A pioneering space traveler has publicly detailed her battle with depression after enduring a relentless barrage of criticism in the aftermath of a landmark journey to the edge of space.

The 34-year-old activist – recognized as a researcher and activist – was part of the 11-minute suborbital flight in the spring, which also featured celebrity crewmates.

The much-publicized journey was widely scrutinized by some, who challenged its value and ecological impact.

Reflecting on the ordeal, Ms. Nguyen, who was celebrated as the first Vietnamese woman in space, stated the negative reaction eclipsed her moment under an landslide of gendered hatred.

“I explained the depression could persist for a long time,” the astronaut shared in a online statement, referring to a phone call from a fellow crew member in the days following the flight.

She characterized the subsequent media coverage and social media frenzy as an unprecedented psychological assault.

“Stuck in Texas, I spent a week unable to rise from my bed,” she revealed. “Even a month on, a phone call ended with me hanging up, weeping uncontrollably.”

Buried Under Misogyny

The researcher, who has dedicated her work to women's health research and operated research during the mission, said all her lifelong efforts – from her scientific research and years of training to the symbolic importance of her heritage – was overshadowed under the tide of sexist vitriol.

She is most acclaimed for her groundbreaking advocacy championing the cause of sexual assault survivors.

Her own dream of becoming an astronaut was paused after being assaulted during her time as a student, leading to a years-long quest for justice.

The Fog Begins to Lift

Months following fulfilling her dream, she reports that the deepest pain is gradually receding, and she expressed gratitude the supporters whose support were her lifeline. “Your support rescued me,” she said.

She concluded that amid the criticism, significant positive outcomes had come out of the experience, including increased focus on her women's health research and chances to influence leaders.

The fully automated spacecraft departed its launch site in April, carrying the historic roster on a brief suborbital flight that passed the edge of outer space.
