The fast bowler Poised for a Major Role in Iconic Rivalry

Pat Cummins bowling

The pace bowler has taken 309 Test scalps in 71 appearances with an average of 22.10.

The Australian chief selector George Bailey has confirmed that pace spearhead Cummins will play a "major part" in the upcoming England-Australia contest.

Rumors had circulated that Cummins might be unavailable due to a stress fracture in his back that was still troubling him.

Earlier indications from team management suggested no official announcement had been made regarding whether he would play, with the Test matches kicking off on the 21st of November in Perth.

Bailey expressed that Cummins is "building up" and felt positive about the prospects of taking part.

"It's clear that time is getting short and multiple considerations around that, not just the physical problem, but additional elements," he commented.

"It's positive. We firmly believe that he's going to play a major part. Ideally it's the first Test. Otherwise, then we'll pick it up."

Previous Setbacks

The captain missed the white-ball matches against New Zealand and India last month after examinations confirmed a lower back issue.

There is a track record of spinal problems, with recurrences in several earlier campaigns leading to absences from several home seasons in a limited period.

The bowler mentioned he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his comeback strategy to secure his spot for the Ashes.

Bailey noted that there was no confirmation if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his rehabilitation but admitted it was "becoming urgent" for him to be fit for the first Test.

Backup Options

In case of absence, former captain Steve Smith will lead the side.

The talented all-rounder was withdrawn recently from the ODI lineup for their one-day international series against the Asian giants as a safety move because of soreness in his side.

Bailey described it as a "minor" injury and stated that he's scheduled to appear in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "well-prepared to deliver overs."

"Considerable effort has gone into developing the strategy for him to take part for the initial game as an batting and bowling option," Bailey explained.

"He was only going to play the starting games in any case. The way he swings the willow in shorter formats, even if it just sets him back for a short period, we just made the decision to approach this more conservatively."
