The artist has handed over the full amount of his £25k award cash to the trust for venues, which works to preserve the UK's small live music spots.

The star was awarded the cheque on October 16 as his latest record People Watching was chosen as the outstanding release of the last 12 months.

He has chosen to hand the money over to the MVT, in recognition of the crucial part grassroots venues played in his initial steps.

"As an artist would not have achieved my current career if it wasn't for all the gigs I did around the region, and beyond, when I was just getting going," said Fender. "These locations are legendary, but they are facing challenges."

From early 2023 onward, over 150 of these venues have permanently closed – approximately 16% of the entire UK sector.

In the last year, major artists such as Pulp, the group Coldplay, Katy Perry and Ed Sheeran have all aided the trust in its efforts to support the industry, by adding a modest fee to their ticket costs, which goes to help smaller concert halls.

Fender also joined in, raising more than £100,000 on his live tour to assist 38 grassroots venues across Britain.

These funds assisted venues that were dealing with possible closure due to difficulties stemming from flooding, fire incidents and bereavements, as well as permit problems, legal disputes and neighbor objections.

Some locations received financial assistance in modernizing amenities and gear that positively impacted artists and fans.

"The concept that revenue from shows in major spaces helps the independent spots, where it all starts for performers like me, is just sensible," Sam Fender has stated.

He is not the first artist to donate his award funds to good deeds.

Back when Pulp won the prize in the mid-90s for their release Different Class, lead singer the singer announced that the act would contribute their winnings to the organization War Child.

During 2002, musician she divided her bounty between a few organizations, like the children's charity and a charity for Sickle Cell.

"And I gave a grand to the center, to their classes, because I trained in gymnastics when I was younger and they required updated gear," the artist shared with a publication.

Previously, they gave their prize money to the community center that nurtured their band, as well as other grassroots music organisations.

Also 1994 winners the group contributed their award to a charity for MS after a friend was diagnosed the illness.

"The victory was ample," said vocalist Small. "The cash was the extra but we didn't require the extra, because we had the honor. So our victory affected somebody else's life."

Last week, the Music Venues Trust revealed it had saved two small stages in that region, by bringing them into local control.

The Joiners in Southampton and the other in that location were bought under the public acquisition initiative, which is funded by a national body and supporters who purchase "stakes" in the properties.
